EL MAR No.2205

2022

Abstract Expressionism on fine art paper by the artist Gustaf Tidholm.

This is the fifth artwork in the EL MAR series.

This piece explores the ocean’s continuous interplay with time, light, and matter. Earthy tones blend with deep black forms, green hues, and washed-out color fields, creating a sense of erosion and transformation. The layers of paint interact as if they have been slowly shaped by wind, water, and salt—a reminder of the ocean’s power to both create and break down.

The deep black forms contrast with lighter, more dissolved areas, where white and green suggest traces of life—perhaps seagrass or vegetation clinging to a pier or an eroded shoreline. The rusty tones evoke human-made structures shaped and altered by the ocean’s constant motion.

The ocean is both a force of change and a place of stillness. This work reminds us that nothing is static—everything is in motion, everything is part of a greater cycle.

The painting is created with a blend of earthy shades, black, rust, green, and white—a palette that captures the ocean’s impact on its surroundings. The technique is executed with acrylic on Lana Vanguard Hi-Tech paper, a high-quality, acid-free material made of 100% polypropylene.

Framing: The artwork is tastefully framed in a simple oak-colored frame with thin plexiglass, highlighting the painting’s textures and organic color play.

Size: 50 x 70 cm.
